Joshimath: The Beginning
Your adventure commences in Joshimath, a picturesque town known for its spiritual significance and scenic vistas. Joshimath serves as the base camp for various treks, and the journey from here to the Valley of Flowers is an experience in itself. The route takes you through some of the most enchanting landscapes of Uttarakhand. The trek starts with a drive from Joshimath to Govindghat, which is about 22 km away. This drive along the Alaknanda River offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Govindghat to Ghangaria
Starting from Govindghat, the trek to Ghangaria is a scenic 14 km journey that's well-maintained and easy to follow. The trail features a gentle ascent with no steep sections, making it accessible for most hikers. As you wind along the Lakshman Ganga River, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of beautiful waterfalls and lush meadows. Ghangaria, a small settlement, serves as the base camp for trekkers heading to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Here, you'll find basic accommodations and eateries, providing a comfortable spot to rest and refuel. Spending the night in Ghangaria allows you to acclimatize and prepare for the next day's adventure.
Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers
The journey from Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers, though short and relatively easy, offers an unparalleled experience. Spanning about 4 kilometres each way, the path starts within a dense forest, gradually transitioning into a breathtaking meadow. As you emerge from the forest, the vibrant colours of the valley's famous wildflowers greet you. Boasting over 500 species, including primulas, orchids and the rare Brahma Kamal, the Valley of Flowers is a true botanical gem. The best time to witness this natural wonder is between July and September, when the flowers are in full bloom, creating a mesmerising tapestry of colours.
Enroute Attractions
Along the way, don’t miss Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site located beside a glacial lake surrounded by seven towering peaks. The tranquil waters reflect the soaring mountains, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty and tranquillity. Hemkund Sahib is about 6 km from Ghangaria and is one of the highest Gurudwaras in the world, situated at an altitude of 4,329 meters. The trek to Hemkund Sahib is steep and challenging, but the spiritual aura and the breathtaking scenery make it a rewarding experience.
